LUOGO: Geffrye Museum e Clerkenwell Design Week, Londra.

PROGETTO: Linaria – Michela Pasquali

DATA: maggio – giugno 2012

“Open for the Chelsea Fringe Festival (19th May to June 9th 2012) and for the Clerkenwell Design Week (May 22nd to 24th 2012), The Garden of Disorientation is a scented mint garden in a former meat packing warehouse which is also a venue for slightly subversive garden-related events. The garden also contains a Cuban mojito bar and provides space for installations from Vienna (Participatory Plant Painting) and Italy (Linaria Mint Mobile). As a showroom we have elegant exterior furniture from The Modern Garden Company & a sustainable deck from Ecochoice; Cubana are running the bar and fresh baby leaf salads come from Steve’s Leaves. The Jasmine Living Wall behind the Mojito Bar was created using Woollypockets kindly supplied by gardenbeet.com.”

THE PROJECT

The installation entails a mobile structure, like the mobiles of Calder, consisting of thin black metal bars, hanging from which by cables at different heights are twenty or so biodegradable vases containing aromatic, scented plants of varying dimensions.
All the plants come from the F.lli Gramaglia’s Nursery, who are partners in the project and who specialize in collections of aromatic plants.

To involve people as much as possible, the installation will be placed at a height that will allow all the plants to be touched and smelt, as well as allowing the whole structure to move.
The overall dimensions of the structure are: height around 200cm, diameter around 150cm. The Mobile, which weighs about 8/10 kg, has no base and so can be hung under an arcade, or from a lamp-post or ceiling. The three versions of the Aromatic Herbs Mobile reflect the different ways in which it can be placed and the space it might occupy.

THE IDEA

The balance of the structure, and so the position of all its elements, together with its movement in space, would suggest how fragile and delicate is the perfect ecological and botanical balance of the natural environment.
Just as the slightest variation of weight or movement in the Mobile produces a change in the ba- lance of the whole structure, so in the environment any small variation produces an alteration of the balance between living beings.

In nature this balance allows life on our planet to continue. It is based on the precise balancing and interaction of all the living beings that, together, create the biological balance, which is stable until external factors cause important changes.
This means it is fundamental for the system to be kept in balance to preserve ecosystems and life.

Definition of balance:

1 Physical state of a system in which the only changes are due to external factors
|| biological balance, constant quantitative relation between the various animal and vegetable species in a given region.

2 Stability of a body, both when still and in motion || sense of balance, control of the position and movement of the body in space.

3 Situation in which no one element dominates the others.
